So how does one know when it is a sleeping disorder?

Difficulty sleeping is normal upto a point. It can be due to multiple factors- hectic schedules, travel needs, stress, going out, etc. But when it happens consistently for a period of time and interferes with one’s functioning is when it may be a cause for concern.

There are different types of sleeping disorders that have different impacts on the person- they can negatively affect one’s mood, focus, energy, and general health.

Sleep disorders can also speak to another medical condition or mental health concern that may be underlying.

Insomnia is the most common type of sleeping disorder. Others include sleep apnea, narcolepsy, parasomnias and restless leg syndrome.

These are identified by assessments made by a medical doctor and then tests like an EEG to understand it more in detail. These are vital for the treatment plan to be determined.

Sleep disorders can be treated in a variety of ways. One of which includes medication for the same depending on the type of sleep disorder, as determined by the relevant medical professional. Other recommended ways are through lifestyle changes - decreasing caffeine intake, substance use, more movement, stress reduction, creating and following a sleep routine (i.e. sleep hygiene).

If the disturbance in sleep patterns is a result of a mental health concern like depression, OCD, PTSD or anxiety, to cite a few examples, Seeking therapy from a professional to understand it more in detail and to cope, is essential.
